A record of a red-footed Booby Sula Sula (L.) from the Cape Verde Islands, with a review of the status of this species in the South Atlantic Ocean Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den.
The first Western Palearctic record of a Red-footed Booby Sula sula (L., 1766), a brown whitetailed morph observed on Cima (Cape Verde Islands), is described. The status of this species in the tropical South Atlantic Ocean is evaluated. At present, Fernando de Noronha is the only South Atlantic stronghold of the species (ca. 4000 individuals; cf. Oren, 1984). The species has disappeared, or almost so, from other islands (St. Helena: absent; Ascension:0-30 individuals; Ilha da Trindade: less than 100 pairs). A link may exist between the apparent recent increase of the population of Fernando de Noronha and the apparent recent decline of the Trindade population. It seems possible that the Trindade population for some unknown reason has migrated to Fernando de...

An early note on the occurrence of the Magnificent Frigate Bird, Fregata magnificens Mathews, 1914, in the Cape Verde Islands: Columbus as an ornithologist Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den.
The importance of ornithological observations with respect to Columbus' discovery of America as recorded in the "Diario del descubrimiento" is recognized. The fact that his first and crucial crossing of the Atlantic coincided with the autumn migration may have contributed to its success. Columbus' log contains the first historical record of the [Magnificent] Frigate Bird, Fregata magnificens Mathews, 1914, in the Cape Verdes, with a surprisingly accurate description of its characteristic habits.

Didiscus verdensis spec. nov. (Porifera: Halichondrida) from the Cape Verde Islands, with a revision and phylogenetic classification of the genus Didiscus Naturalis
Hiemstra, F.; Soest, R.W.M. van.
A new species of the circumtropical/subtropical genus Didiscus Dendy, 1922 is described from the Cape Verde Islands. Based on a phylogenetic analysis of all known species of the genus, using morphological and microscopical (including SEM) characters, it was demonstrated that the new species is closest to the eastern Mediterranean D. styliferus Tsurnamal, 1968.

Further information on the Dohrn-Keulemans collection of birds from the Cape Verde Islands Naturalis
Hazevoet, C.J.; Fischer, S..
Until recently, only one specimen from the series of syntypes of the Cape Verde Cane Warbler Acrocephalus brevipennis, collected by H. Dohrn and J.G. Keulemans in 1865, was known to be still in existence. Another specimen belonging to this series has now been discovered in the collections of the Berlin museum. Some additional information on the Dohrn-Keulemans collection is given, based on listings in the old catalogues of this museum.

Marine interstitial Amphipoda and Isopoda (Crustacea) from Santiago, Cape Verde Islands Naturalis
Stock, Jan H.; Vonk, Ronald.
Three species of Amphipoda are recorded from interstices of a marine beach on the island of Santiago, Cape Verde Archipelago: Cabogidiella littoralis n. gen., n. sp. (Bogidiellidae), Psammogammarus spinosus n. sp. (Melitidae), and Idunella sketi Karaman, 1980 (Liljeborgiidae). On the history and type specimens of the Cape Verde Cane Warbler Acrocephalus brevipennis (Keulemans, 1866) (Aves, Sylviidae) Naturalis
Hazevoet, C.J..
The Cape Verde Cane Warbler Acrocephalus brevipennis was first described in 1866, and again in 1871 and 1883. These descriptions were all made after specimens from the same series. A type specimen was never designated and only one syntype from the original series can be traced today. The taxonomic history of the species is discussed and the single remaining syntype described. The present status and distribution of the species are briefly discussed.

Platypodiella georgei spec. nov. (Brachyura: Xanthidae), a new crab from the island of St. Helena, South Atlantic Ocean, with notes on the genus Platypodiella Guinot, 1967 Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den; Türkay, M..
A new species of Platypodiella Guinot, 1967, from the island of St. Helena, P. georgei spec, nov., is described. This species was found associated with encrusting species of Palythoa Lamouroux, 1816 (Zoantharia). Ample evidence is presented that both the eastern Atlantic P. picta (A. Milne-Edwards, 1869) and the western Atlantic P. spectabilis (Herbst, 1794) also live habitually associated with encrusting species of Palythoa, rarely with other zoantharians. For each of the two East-Pacific members of the genus, P. rotundata (Stimpson, 1860) and P. gemmata (Rathbun, 1902), there is at least one rather detailed published record suggesting that these species too associate with Palythoa. Thus, this habit would seem to go for all five members of the genus. Data...

Bryde’s Whale Balaenoptera edeni, Killer Whale Orcinus orca, Rough-toothed Dolphin Steno bredanensis, and Striped Dolphin Stenella coeruleoalba. An earlier report of Fin Whale B. physalus is reviewed and re-identified as B. cf. borealis. Status and occurrence of the Humpback Whale Megaptera novaeangliae are discussed at some length. Unpublished observations from other observers are also included and a short account on the history of whaling in the islands is given. A list of all cetacean taxa reliably recorded in the Cape Verde region is presented...

Zoanthids of the Cape Verde Islands and their symbionts: previously unexamined diversity in the Northeastern Atlantic Naturalis
Reimer, J.D.; Hirose, M.; Wirtz, P..
The marine invertebrate fauna of the Cape Verde Islands contains many endemic species due to their isolated location in the eastern Atlantic, yet research has not been conducted on most taxa here. One such group are the zoanthids or mat anemones, an order of benthic cnidarians (Hexacorallia: Zoantharia) common in many marine environments. In this study, the diversity of zoanthids in the Cape Verde Islands is specifically examined for the first time. Field images and sampling are combined with molecular phylogenetic analyses utilizing two mitochondrial DNA markers (cytochrome oxidase subunit I and 16S ribosomal DNA) to determine the number of species present. Specimens from eight species (Palythoa caribaeorum, Palythoa sp. 265, Zoanthus aff. pulchellus,...
